January 24, 2008

Hi all ...

Well its been a long time since I sat down and posted news ... last season kinda ended on sad notes and not many successes.

BUT

We got the midget ready and went to Tulsa Oklahoma for the ChiliBowl. 277 cars showed up, all in one building with a 1/4 mile track all indoors and climate controlled. Check out the pictures at their site of the pits and track and all.

Bobby Michnowvicz agreed to drive the car again this year, he did very well last year in his first ever trip to Tulsa.

I spent about two weeks getting the car all put back together and everything repaired from the few races and crashes it had suffered over the season. Packed the trailer and Ron and Ray pulled it behind Ron's motorhome to Tulsa.

This event is the largest and most prestigious race in the U.S. , it has competitors from EVERY form of auto racing everywhere in the world ... we had the likes of NASCAR stars Tony Stewart (last years winner), J.J.Yeley, Jason Lefflor, and Casey Kayne, NHRA topguns Gary Scelzi and Cruz Pedregon, Late model ace Tim McCreadie, a whole gamut of sprint car aces like Shane Cottle, Tracy Hines, Davey Ray, Dave Darland Jerry Coons and on, and on, and on. We are talking BIG money teams with unlimited budgets and EVERYTHING new and the best.

And along comes us ... a five year old car, a ten year old motor (freshened of course), a 45 year old driver, two sixty something old mechanics and our little 20 foot trailer.

AND WE MADE THE SHOW

Of the 277 cars that actually raced, 88 were from California, 12 were regulars at Ventura Raceway.

In the Main event Saturday, of the 24 cars, Josh Ford was the only Ventura county racer, and OUR Car and Driver were the ONLY VENTURA RACEWAY regulars.

The event is four days of qualifying for the Saturday mains ... which started with twin I's and continued up the alphabet with four cars advancing each step.

Only four cars from each of the last three qualifying nights went directly to the Saturday main event.

Our week went thus ...

Thurs heat race ............... WE WIN

Thurs qualifier ................. SECOND

Thurs main event ............ SEVENTH .... put us directly in the B Main on Saturday

Saturday B Main ............ SECOND (to Tony Stewart)

Saturday A Main ............ started 20th and finished 21st due to a wreck not of our making and car damaged to much to continue

The Saturday C thru A main were on National Television, carried on HBO Pay per view by Speed TV. Even I was shown on the ramp at the track during the event. hehe ... have the whole thing on tape for viewing (I haven't seen the race yet myself)

We had a FABULOUS week and we easily won the WHO WERE THOSE GUYS award. IT was great.

And so ... we start 2008 with a GREAT SUCCESS and look forward to the year ahead.

Wes will not be racing regularly though he may run the Grand Slam series.

The grand kids will be driving their new 'MiniDwarf' that I am putting the finishing touches on this week

And Ron will make a run at the VRA Seniors Track Championship again.

So ... hope to share more of our fun with everyone as the year progresses.

Joe
